How to Hide Your Instagram Story From Specific People

There are times when you want to share a story without making it visible to every follower. Instagram’s story privacy controls let you hide future stories from specific people without blocking them or removing them from your followers. It is a practical middle ground when you need a little more control over what someone sees.

Hide your story from specific people

Open Instagram, go to your profile and tap the menu in the top-right corner. In Settings and activity, open Hide story and live under the privacy options for who can see your content. Choose Hide story and live from, then select the accounts you do not want to see your stories.

Once selected, those accounts will not see new stories or live content that you share. You can return to the same list at any time and remove someone if you want to restore access.

Hiding a story is not the same as blocking

Hiding your story only changes access to stories and live broadcasts. The person can still see your profile and regular posts if they are otherwise allowed to do so. They can also still find your account in search. If you need a stronger boundary, consider restricting or blocking the account instead.

Use Close Friends for smaller updates

If you want to share something with a small group rather than exclude a few individuals, Close Friends may be easier. Build a Close Friends list and choose that audience when you post the story. This works well for behind-the-scenes updates, personal moments, early previews or content that is relevant to a specific community.

Review privacy before you share

Check your audience setting before publishing a story that includes personal information, locations, client work or time-sensitive plans. A quick review takes seconds and is much easier than trying to manage a screenshot after the story has been seen.

For businesses, the best setting depends on the purpose of the story. Product questions, polls and public updates usually benefit from a broad audience. Private team updates or customer-specific content may need a narrower one. If you are planning content and services around the platform, our Instagram SMM panel is a useful place to explore relevant options.
