There are times when you want to use Instagram without inviting a conversation. Maybe you are catching up on messages late at night, checking a draft before publishing it, or simply taking a break from being available. Instagram’s Activity Status is the small green dot and “active now” or “active recently” information that appears in messaging. Turning it off is straightforward, but there is one trade-off worth knowing before you do it.
What changes when you hide your Activity Status
With Activity Status switched on, people you follow and people you have messaged may be able to see when you are active or when you were last active. When you turn it off, Instagram stops showing your status to them. In return, you also lose the ability to see theirs. It is a two-way privacy setting, not a way to remain invisible while monitoring everyone else.
How to turn it off
In the Instagram app, open your profile and go to the menu. Look for Settings and activity, then open Messages and story replies. Choose Show Activity Status and turn the switch off. Menu labels can move slightly as Instagram updates the app, so the settings search is often the quickest route if you cannot spot it immediately.
When it makes sense to leave it on
For friends, collaborators, and small teams, the active indicator can make direct messages feel less formal. It helps someone know whether a reply is likely soon and can reduce unnecessary follow-up messages. If you manage a business account, however, it is usually better to set expectations in your bio, auto-replies, or story highlights than to rely on an activity dot.
Privacy is more than one setting
Hiding Activity Status will not make a public account private, hide your stories, or remove past messages. It is one piece of a wider privacy setup. Review who can message you, who can reply to stories, and who can tag or mention you if you want a quieter inbox. The settings are most useful when they reflect the way you actually use the account, rather than being turned on because a checklist told you to do it.
If you are building a content plan and want a clearer view of the services available for different Instagram goals, our Instagram SMM panel guide is a useful starting point. Keep the plan realistic: good posting habits, a well-managed inbox, and clear privacy settings do more for a sustainable account than trying to be online all the time.
A simple rule of thumb
Turn Activity Status off when you want more control over your availability. Leave it on when it genuinely helps the people you need to communicate with. Either choice is fine; the important thing is knowing that Instagram treats it as a shared setting, so turning yours off also hides everyone else’s status from you.
